Warning - this website uses cookies

Since the implementation of GDPR you may have noticed an increase in cookie policy warnings on the websites that you visit. These pop up warnings were widely viewed as annoyoying and unecessary, and many organisations simply did not use them. Now however, GDPR regulations insist that websites tell visitors if their data is being gathered and processed through a cookie policy warning.

What is a website cookie?

A website cookie is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored on the user's computer. They were designed to allow websites to remember useful information or record browsing activity. This can then be used to enhance the user's browsing experience, for example by making it easy to find pages that have previously been viewed, or keeping them logged in to a particular website account.

But cookies could also be seen as intrusive as they allow websites to gather information (pages viewed, time spent on a page, frequently bought items or buttons clicked) which can be used to build up an anonymous profile of a user - which could in turn be used for targeted advertising. This is why GDPR insist on websites having a cookie policy warning.

Example of cookie policy warning at top of page.

What is a cookie policy warning?

A cookie policy warning displays on the page when a user first accesses a website to warn them that the site uses cookies. Once the warning pop up has been closed (i.e. terms agreed) it will not appear again for that user on that browser, unless they clear their cookies or go 'incognito'.

Pretty much all websites use cookies, so should have a cookies policy warning in place. Prior to GDPR many companies did not - hence the huge increase in them appearing since the regulations have been implemented.

We are now recommending that all our clients have a cookie policy warning on their website in order to be GDPR compliant. For more information please call 0117 907 9930 or email your enquiry and a member of our team will get back to you.
